How to Join the Library

Visit our library to apply for a library membership card. Membership is available to all residents of Western Australia at no charge and regardless of age.

To join the library you will need to present some form of identification containing your current address.  Acceptable forms of identification are a drivers licence, pension card, utilities account or rent agreement.

  • If you are under 18, you need to come to the library with your parent/guardian to join.
  • Your library card must be presented every time you wish to borrow the items from the library.
  • You need to notify the library as soon as possible, if your card is lost or stolen.

By joining the Bassendean Memorial Library you agree to the following statement:

I hereby apply for membership of the Town of Bassendean Library Services entitling me to borrow books and other materials for specified periods of time. I agree that all material lent to me shall receive proper care while in my possession, that I shall recompense the Town of Bassendean for any loss or damage and that I shall observe all rules of the Library which I have read and understood.

Borrowing Rules & Conditions

  1. A Library card is required to borrow items; resources cannot be removed from the building unless they are registered as a loan.

  2. The Library needs to be notified if the card is lost or stolen as library patrons are responsible for any items borrowed prior to such notification.
  1. All items need to be returned on or before the due date in good condition as patrons may be required to pay the replacement cost for damaged or lost items.
  1. The Library does not censor resources used, borrowed or accessed from the library.
  1. Parents/Guardians are responsible for their child’s resource selection and in the monitoring of library resource and Internet use.

What Can I Borrow?

A combination of 20 items per membership per card can be borrowed and the loan period is three weeks.

Maximum loans per category are:

  • 15 books (this includes talking books,magazines and videos)
  • 15 DVDs
  • 15 music CDs
  • 15 jigsaw puzzles
  • 2 Board games per person for 2 weeks

Library cards must be presented to borrow items. Items can be returned during opening hours or through the after hours return chute.

Renewals and Overdues

Renewing Items

All loans are for 3 weeks only. Items may be renewed in person or by telephone, or on-line as long as they have not been requested by another patron.

Overdues

Reminder notices are sent if items are not returned within 2 weeks after the due back date. To avoid being charged for the replacement cost of items and all overdue items must be returned within the next 2 weeks.

Lost and Damaged Items

The library will charge for items that have been lost or damaged beyond repair. The charge will equal a replacement cost for Bassendean Library items and a depreciated cost for State Library of Western Australia items. Minor damage that doesn’t affect the items usefulness will not attract any charge.

Reservations and Requests

Reservations

All items that are currently available or on loan, can be reserved by patrons.  A limit of 12 items can be reserved per membership card.  Please search our catalogue and reserve an item online by clicking on the Reserve link.  Items that are available may be reserved for the same day as Click and Collect.  

New additions to our collection are displayed in the library and also by accessing New Titles in Stock located in the Our Catalogue tab.  Patrons may reserve in person or by using the New Titles in Stock.  New Titles in Stock changes weekly.  

Notices are sent by mail,  e-mail and SMS advising patrons when an item is ready for collection.  Patrons are advised to collect items before the 8 day expiry date.

  • Online: Click here to see your account. You will need a password to access 'My Account'.  Please phone the library on 9279 2966 and staff will issue you a temporary password that must be changed within a 14 day period. 

Click and Collect

Did you know that you can Click and Collect?

You can access our catalogue to reserve items online from the comfort of your home.  No need to hunt them down on the shelves, just grab and go!

How does it work?
  1. Search our Catalogue
  2. Click on the reserve link
  3. Enter your Library card barcode and password* and click reserve. We will send a notification once items are ready to collect
  4. Come to the library and go to the loans desk to collect your items.

*If you do not have a password, please contact us on 9279 2966, or email us at  [email protected] and we can issue you with a temporary password.

A maximum of 12 items can be reserved, per membership card via the reserve link.

Contactless pick up can also be arranged if required.

Requests

Items that cannot be found in our catalogue can be requested (limited to set of guidelines) from another library via inter-library loans. The availability of items in the State’s library can be established by searching the State Library of Western Australia’s catalogue here. Requests can be submitted at the library or via e-mail.
