Bassendean Library is ready for DECODABLES! Our new Early Reader Phonics Series.

"THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A KID WHO HATES READING. THERE ARE KIDS WHO LOVE READING, AND KIDS WHO ARE READING THE WRONG BOOK."
James Patterson

What is Phonics?
Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes, distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another, for example p, b, d, and t in the English words pad, pat, bad, and bat. —in order to t
each the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

What are Decodables?
Decodable texts are specifically written for beginning readers as they are developing their blending and segmenting skills and their knowledge of the alphabetic code. The primary purpose of decodable texts is to provide readers with the opportunity to practise what has been taught during explicit, systematic phonics instruction. Decodable texts support readers as they practise blending the letter-sounds they have been taught through words, in continuous meaningful text. A decodable text places gradual demands on a reader’s letter-sound knowledge. The purpose is to support the development of independent phonic and fluency skills. Decodable texts are a short term support, not a long term resource for most
students.

How can I get them out?
The Early Reader Decodables series is most effective when each level is taken out as one loan. Each level will be placed behind our library counter in closed bags, and their individual boxes will be placed in the children’s area. Please bring the box to the counter, and we will exchange it for the series bag. Generally, each series has 10-20 small books that take the new reader through each phonetic sound, allowing them to slowly join sounds together and make words. We recommend
that you begin at level one and work your way through the series.
