Pensioner Guards Cottage Open Days

Past Event

Have you ever visited the Pensioner Guard Cottage at 1 Surrey Street, Bassendean?

It is the last remaining cottage in the metropolitan area available for members of the public to visit and see how an Enrolled Pensioner Guard family lived c1856.

Owned by the Town of Bassendean since 1988, it is opened on the last Sunday of each month (excluding December and January) by the volunteer members of the Bassendean Historical Society Inc.   A gold coin donation is appreciated.

The two bedroom cottage contains information about life in early West Guildford and the original inhabitants, the Law Davis family.

Find out about the Enrolled Pensioner Guards and understand how small the community was and how the pensioner guards supervised the convicts housed in the Guildford Depot in work gangs to make roads, clear trees and make buildings from local materials.

The 1893 residence next door, also owned by the Town, will be the site of a future museum.
